Profile

Position Currently focused on commercial and business development across power, natural gas and energy infrastructure at Decentralised Energy Limited, following experience in project finance at DREEF and investment banking at CardinalStone Partners.

My work sits at the intersection of capital and assets, where I assess the bankability of projects and develop financing structures that support their execution.

I began my career in investment banking at CardinalStone Partners, where I worked on M&A, equity and debt capital market transactions across financial services, consumer goods, industrials, and oil and gas. During this period, I contributed to five publicly announced issuances, including Access Holdings’ NGN 365 billion rights issue and Dangote Cement’s NGN 83.3 billion commercial paper programme, as well as acquisition analysis for a Tier 1 Nigerian bank evaluating the potential acquisition of a West African bank.

At DREEF, I transitioned to the lender side, where I built project finance models to assess the bankability of distributed renewable energy projects, conducted financial due diligence against investment and lender criteria in collaboration with InfraCredit’s technical team, and structured debt, equity and blended finance solutions for investment committee consideration.

At Decentralised Energy Limited, I work across the commercial and development lifecycle of energy projects, originating and evaluating opportunities across power, natural gas and CNG. My work includes assessing tariffs, project returns, payment security and risk allocation, negotiating PPAs, GSPAs and other commercial agreements, and preparing investment and approval memoranda for consideration by management, the Executive Committee and the Board.

Across these activities, the focus remains consistent: understanding the economics of each opportunity, allocating risk appropriately, and structuring projects on terms that are commercially viable and capable of attracting capital.

Project finance structure

Structure chart
Typical project finance structure Sponsors contribute equity and lenders provide senior debt to a project company, which contracts with an EPC contractor, an operations and maintenance operator, an offtaker under a power purchase agreement and a gas supplier under a gas sales and purchase agreement, all supported by a security package. Sponsors Equity and development Lenders and DFIs Senior and blended debt Equity Senior debt Project company (SPV) Cash waterfall, reserve accounts EPC contractor Construction, date certain O&M operator Availability, performance Offtaker PPA, tariff, payment security Gas supplier GSPA, price and volume Security package Share pledge · assignment of project contracts · debt service reserve
Every arrow is a cash flow or an obligation the model has to price, and a risk somebody has to hold. Getting that allocation right is most of the work before a number is defensible.

Sizing debt to cash flow

Schematic
Debt sculpting and cover ratio schematic Upper panel: a sculpted repayment profile holds the debt service cover ratio constant across periods, while a level repayment profile leaves cover below the minimum in the early years before rising. Lower panel: debt service sized as a constant proportion of the cash available for debt service in each period. Illustrative shapes only, with no project data. DEBT SERVICE COVER RATIO Minimum cover Level repayment Sculpted Cash available for debt service Debt service
Repayment shaped to the cash flow keeps cover above the lender's floor in every period, rather than only on average. Illustrative shapes — no project data is shown.

07

How I work

Three positions Views formed on Nigerian power, gas and distributed energy transactions.

Risk allocation comes before returns

A projected return is only as credible as the contractual framework supporting it. Before focusing on IRR or valuation, the more important question is how the project’s key risks are allocated and whether the parties assuming those risks have the capacity to manage them.

Much of the analytical work therefore comes down to understanding who bears construction, supply, offtake, payment, operating and currency risk, how those risks are mitigated, and whether the contractual structure creates a sufficiently predictable cash flow profile to support investment and financing.

Bankability is a documentation problem

A financial model may demonstrate that a project can work, but lenders ultimately finance the contractual arrangements that make those projected cash flows enforceable and predictable. The model and the underlying agreements therefore have to tell the same story.

Tariff, tenor, debt service coverage, payment security, termination provisions, risk allocation and other key assumptions must remain consistent across the financial model and transaction documents. Even a strong project can become difficult to finance when those elements are unclear, misaligned or inadequately documented. Bankability is therefore not only about attractive economics, but about translating those economics into a coherent and enforceable contractual structure that lenders can rely on.

The energy gap is a structuring problem

In many markets, the need for energy infrastructure is clear and the underlying technology is already proven. The harder challenge is creating a commercial and financing structure that allows projects to move from demand to execution.

What often determines whether a project reaches financial close is not the existence of demand, but the strength of its payment security, the sustainability of its tariff, the allocation of key risks and the capital structure supporting it. The right combination of commercial discipline, credit enhancement and concessional or commercial capital can turn a technically viable project into an investable one.

Open to conversations on infrastructure, energy and project finance.

I am always interested in thoughtful conversations around transactions, advisory mandates, career opportunities and the financing and development of power, gas and broader infrastructure projects in Nigeria and across Africa.
